age 14: Sexual acts are permitted at this age as long as both persons are over 14 and there is no more than a 5 year age difference. (ex. a 14 year old can consent to sex with a 17 year old, but not a 20 year old.)

age 15:

age 16: Age of consent. At this age you can legally have sex with someone over 21. This is for both heterosexual and homosexual acts.

age 17:

age 18: The age of consent changes if one person is in a position of power over another (ex. a teacher, employer, coach or minister.) Then the age of consent is 18, but in some cases it's 21.


Penalties for Violating Age of Consent in Maine:

Maine law states that have sexual intercourse with some under 14 (known as gross sexual assault) is punishable with up to 40 years in prison.

If sexual intercourse happens when one person is 14 or 15 and the other is at least 5 years older, that is known as sexual abuse of a minor. It is a lesser offense and the punishment is up to 1 year in prison. If there is a 10 year or more age difference, then the punishment is up to 5 years in state prison.

The law is unclear on what to do if both parties are under the age of consent.
